Board Governance Facilitators (Contract, 20 or 40 hours/week)

Hours: 40 hours/week or 20 hours/week for regional facilitators


The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is reviewing their governance processes and plans to facilitate broad conversations with the community around best practices for appointing new community-sourced members of the Board. The Board Governance Facilitators will perform a key role on international coordination to ensure that the volunteers and affiliates related to the languages or regions assigned participate in these processes on equitable terms.

You are responsible for:

  • Experienced users of Wikimedia projects, capable of summarizing volunteers’ and affiliates’ perspectives within the Foundation and vice-versa.
  • Experienced facilitators of online conversations and decision-making processes.  
  • Strong communicator (both verbally and in writing), able to explain the ongoing work to different groups of volunteers with different levels of involvement in the movement.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Additionally, we seek fluent speakers of German, French or a major language in use in the region assigned.
  • Good knowledge of the communities and affiliates active in one of these regions: Central and Eastern Europe, East SouthEast Asia and the Pacific, Indian subcontinent, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Able to focus on the larger picture and able to express which concerns and views are widespread and which are marginal or individual.
  • Approachable, and able to build trust with volunteers and staff
  • Self-motivated - they will occasionally need to execute on ambiguous tasks with little supervision, but in direct coordination with other facilitators.
  • Strongly empathetic - they will excel at understanding the perspectives of others and bridging the gap between different approaches.

Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with multiple Wikimedia projects beyond Wikipedia is a major plus;
  • Familiarity with Wikimedia global conversations (i.e. Movement Strategy) and communication channels like Meta-Wiki.
  • Familiarity with multiple communication and social media channels used by the language or regional communities assigned.
  • Familiarity with video conference meetings and basic video publishing (e.g. on Commons or YouTube, Instagram...)
  • Experience with governance processes in Wikimedia or other volunteer / non-profit / open knowledge / open source communities. You will be the main contact point for your communities and other stakeholders not deeply familiar with the subject who are looking for help in orientating themselves.
  • Additional fluency in other languages
