Site Reliability Engineer - Git Storage Operations

Remote - US / Canada Engineering

GitHub is looking for a talented engineer to join our Git Systems group to help run the largest code-hosting platform in the world. Our group is responsible for the services that store and serve Git repositories, both directly to users and to other layers in the GitHub software stack. Come join our engineering team and help us build a variety of externally and internally facing services, proxies, and control systems. You’ll be working in an agile engineering team that’s part of the larger Infrastructure group here at GitHub. You’ll work with and learn from highly experienced engineers as well as influence your team using your knowledge. In addition, we support and reward spending time on improving diversity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as other important improvement-work outside your core role as a software engineer.

We work as a distributed group within a distributed company. Our team members are distributed across North America and Europe and, whilst we do have some offices, all our meetings are location-agnostic and happen online. We operate with a high degree of autonomy and trust, and we have a significant level of influence on the technical direction of Git Systems, as well as broader infrastructure at GitHub. We value learning, introspection and reflection, and we’re always looking for ways to improve as a team and as individuals, so candor and a culture that values safety to speak up are highly important to us.

Our engineers...

  • Show humility when they are right and have the confidence to admit mistakes
  • Review code and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback
  • Are comfortable working asynchronously with a distributed team
  • Triage, reproduce, and debug technical support requests, bugs, and feature requests
  • Work with sophisticated systems and take pride in writing maintainable code
  • Help make GitHub a great home for developers
  • Plan, design, implement, and review the software that powers the distributed systems that support Git at GitHub

You may be a good fit if you have…

  • Proficiency in a high-level language such as Ruby or Python.
  • Familiarity with configuration management software such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Salt.
  • A tenacious ability to diagnose and fix performance and reliability problems.
  • A pragmatic approach to decision making and design choices.
  • An ability to find and fix the root cause of systematic problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially when working with a distributed team
  • Experience with network protocols and distributed systems
  • Developed and operated production applications in a Linux or Unix environment
  • A track record of building infrastructure automation.

Nothing in life is perfect including this job description. You may be an excellent fit even if you don’t meet all of the qualifications. We look forward to meeting you and hearing about your unique skills and experiences!
